Diabetes Awareness, Wellness and Nutrition (DAWN) Program

The DAWN program is a comprehensive diabetes education group / class series that follows ADA approved guidelines. This 6 hour series targets those living with and/or caring for others who live with type 1 diabetes, pre-diabetes, or type 2 diabetes. DAWN is taught by a Registered Dietitian who is also a Certified Diabetes Educator. PNTs DAWN program offers an opportunity to meet others living with diabetes and to share experiences that enhance learning. Classes of 2 or more form monthly, call for details – 972-238-1811.
The goal of this program is to enable you to control your diabetes in such a manner that you avoid the rapid progression of the disease. If not controlled, diabetes can lead to very serious complications including kidney disease, blindness, lower limb amputation, hearing loss, and heart disease.
The classes cover the following topics plus answer any specific questions or challenges that the individuals might have:
- Pre-class Questionnaire to address individual concerns, unique situations & medical histories
- The Basics of Diabetes: Signs, Symptoms, Diagnosis, and Treatment
- Exercise and Medication for Diabetes
- Meal Planning with Diabetes: Carbohydrate Counting
- Meal Planning with Diabetes: Fat, Fiber and Sodium
- Meal Planning with Diabetes: Eating Out
- Awareness and Prevention of Diabetes Complications
- Diabetes Management Evaluation: Being the Team Leader in your Healthcare
- Post- Class Questionnaire to evaluate the actual behavior changes of participant
Participants will receive:
- A binder of information
- An Exchange List for Meal Planning booklet
- A free blood glucometer for blood glucose monitoring at home
- A free e-pedometer to track and record the number of steps taken / day
