Targeted Weight Management: Designed By Your Genes

Wouldn’t it be wonderful if you could prevent devastating diseases from developing in your life just by changing your food choices and amounts? Since Genome Mapping was completed in 2003, such a concept is within your grasp! You can match correct personalized nutrition choices to your own gene map; the process is called Nutrigenomics.

“New research has shown that we now can know what kind of nutrition – a low fat diet or a low carbohydrate diet – is going to be best for weight management, based on a DNA test.”

Former Director of the National Human Genome Research Institute

What is Genergy?

A programmatic approach to Genetic testing for weight management with individualized nutrition consultation and follow-up.

Why Genergy?

  • Knowing your body’s needs based on your DNA test removes the guesswork.
  • Nutrition coaching from registered dietitians using results from your very own DNA test is the key. Our dietitians are trained to tailor solutions to your genetic analysis.  No one wants to be alone to figure out how to respond to this analysis.
  • Registered dietitians at PNT are trained to tailor solutions to your genetic analysis.  Having the analysis done without providing the nutritional solutions can be quite frustrating to a consumer.  No one wants to be left on their own to figure out how to respond to this analysis.
  • Combine your individual genetic profile of body weight and responsiveness to diet and exercise with a personalized – genotypic – nutrition plan!
  • Knowing your specific body needs can save you time and money by allowing you to focus on your particular nutritional requirements. This is evidence-based information from your DNA test versus guesswork for your personal health and wellness.

How does the program work?

Step 1
Come to our office to complete the DNA test.  Simply swipe 2 swabs along the inside of your cheeks. PNT sends your swabs to the designated lab.  You receive a questionnaire about your health and lifestyle to return to the PNT RD.

In about 10 days an analysis of your DNA isolated from the swabs will be returned to PNT. These DNA results and questionnaire are analyzed by your PNT RD and reviewed by our physician to compile your comprehensive personalized assessment.

Step 2
Using your comprehensive personalized assessment, you and your dietitian meet to develop a specific plan of action based on your genotype.

Follow up appointments may be scheduled that can be done  in-person or by telephone.

More about Genergy and Genetic Testing

◊ Did you ever wonder what it would be like if you knew firsthand what you could and could not eat the day you were born to keep you healthy and disease free?

◊ If you have a disease wouldn’t it be great to know exactly what and how much to eat for your own individual system (nutritargeting) to respond and heal?  After the DNA test, you will be enabled through coaching sessions to accumulate nutrients in desired tissues while sparing or protecting other tissues.

◊ Did you wonder why some people live to be 100 despite a lifelong diet of fatty foods, while others need to cut back?  Which one are you?  Only your mapping can tell you.

The following is more detailed information regarding the Genergy programs now offered by PNT:

Genergy Programs personalize an individual’s nutrition intake based on DNA tests that can determine what kind of nutrition is going to be best for positive outcomes.   Dr. Mark DeLegge (gastroenterologist at Medical University of SC) states, “as a physician who has been practicing nutrition for many years, I know that a person’s genetic assessment and subsequent targeted nutrition therapy is the right approach to produce very positive outcomes for a number of diseases and conditions including heart health, bone health and weight management.”

Genergy Programs put into practice the new term in nutrigenomics, nutritargeting, that is like drug targeting since both are a rifle approach to homing in on specific tissues vs a shotgun approach.

Genergy Programs are delivered by registered dietitians (RDs) who personalize plans, i.e. personalize food and nutrition supplements based on genetic profile results vs. general one-a-day supplement that might not be needed or result in over-accumulation of certain nutrients in tissues outside of the deficient or diseased targeted tissues.

Genergy “nutritargets” individual risks vs current nutrition epidemiological methods that only yield risk factors* on the basis of population studies.

“We are very excited about combining the technology of genetic testing with individualized nutrition coaching at Professional Nutrition Therapists based in Dallas, TX.  Our clients are interested in making changes based not only on their own lifestyle but also on their own individual genetic makeup.”

Targeted weight management: Dr. Christopher Gardner (genetics researcher at Stanford University, Palo Alto, CA) reports, “The potential of using genetic information to achieve [short term and long term] weight loss without pharmaceutical intervention [is] important in helping to solve the pervasive problem of excessive weight in our society.    A specific DNA test can now give accurate predictions about an individual’s response to a low fat diet or a low carbohydrate diet or a balanced diet.”

Genergy’s targeted weight management program, is a unique approach in combining the individual genetic profile of responsiveness to components in the diet and to exercise with a personalized, physician-reviewed nutrition plan.  Dr. Carol Ireton-Jones, also a Registered Dietitian and Principal at Professional Nutrition Therapists, says “We are currently completing a small study using the 5 genetic single nucleotide polymorphisms associated with carbohydrate, fat and exercise to assess effectiveness in promoting weight management. Our study is evaluating the use of the gene testing for weight management for both weight loss and healthy weight maintenance as many of our clients are interested in promoting better health and fitness, not just weight loss”.

◊ “Weight management is complex – whether trying to maintain your weight or lose or gain” said Dr. DeLegge.  “This is not something most people are going to be able to solve on their own. Of course, knowing your genetic makeup will assist you in weight management for basic good health!”

*Risk factors are statistical estimates of % reduction in disease in the population if the risk were to be avoided or the gene variants were not present.  Developing individual risk factors in light of human genetic diversity, complexity of foods, culture and lifestyle, and the variety of metabolic processes that lead to health or disease is a significant challenge for personalizing dietary advice for healthy individuals or those with chronic disease.
